ENVELOPE

A typical paper envelope is padded with Alcantara®, a material made from micro fibre.

In the moment of opening an abundance of creased Alcantara® unfolds. The soft material is steamed and dried while being crumbled in order to magnify the arrangements of folds in the final product. No additive material is used to fix the connection. An ultrasonic welding machine is used to melt Alcantara® into the porosities of the paper envelope. The unique composition of Alcantara® as a material makes it possible to achieve both smooth volume and tight fixture. In this voluminous padding messages are hidden to appear while opening.

This product was developed 2010/2011 at The Berlin University of the Arts in cooperation with Alcantara S.p.A. in order to find new applications for this high value material.

Envelope has been published in DAMn° Magazine 31.

The project was on show at Qubique 2011 - Furniture design tradeshow from October 26 to 29, 2011, at Berlin’s decommissioned Tempelhof Airport, Hangar 5 #7.
